Flash Flood Sweeps Away Three-Storey Home in China’s Fujian

FUJIAN, CHINA — WEB DESK: A powerful flash flood swept away a three-storey house in Xianyou County in southeastern China’s Fujian province on Thursday, as intense rainfall associated with Tropical Storm Saudel continued to threaten parts of the region.

Video circulated by Shanghai Daily and reproduced in Pakistani media showed a torrent of muddy water overwhelming the building before carrying away much of the structure. According to the report accompanying the footage, residents had evacuated in advance and no casualties were reported from the house itself.

The dramatic incident occurred on September 3 in Xianyou County, an area of Fujian that has faced heavy rainfall and an elevated risk of sudden flooding.

Residents Reportedly Evacuated Before Flood Hit

The most important detail surrounding the viral footage is that the destruction of the building does not appear to have caused fatalities.

The Shanghai Daily post quoted by Express said residents had been evacuated before the flood arrived, while no casualties were reported in connection with the house.

However, detailed independent information about how many people normally lived in the building, when exactly they evacuated or the full extent of damage in its immediate neighbourhood was not available in the reporting reviewed.

For that reason, the video should not be described as showing people trapped inside the building.

Heavy Rain Hits Southeastern China

The flooding came amid severe weather affecting southeastern China.

Saudel has followed an unusual path after previously moving across mainland China and then re-emerging over the South China Sea. By September 1, meteorological tracking showed the system moving towards the Taiwan Strait, with the possibility of prolonged heavy rainfall affecting coastal areas.

The system was expected to remain relatively weak in terms of sustained winds compared with a major typhoon, but slow movement and proximity to land increased the potential for prolonged rainfall, rough seas and local flooding.

Earlier forecasts had warned of exceptionally heavy rainfall across southeastern China, including Fujian and neighbouring Zhejiang province. Some forecasts indicated cumulative rainfall totals of 200 to 400 millimetres, with isolated areas potentially receiving more than 500mm.

Such forecasts describe broader regional conditions and should not be interpreted as confirmed rainfall totals specifically for Xianyou County during Thursday’s house incident.

Fujian Vulnerable to Rain-Induced Flooding

Fujian’s geography makes parts of the province particularly exposed to flooding and other rainfall-related hazards.

Around 75% of Fujian is mountainous, while typhoons are an important source of extreme rainfall during the July-to-September period, according to recent research examining extreme rainfall hazards across the province. Xianyou is among the meteorological locations covered by that research.

The Mulan River basin in Xianyou County has previously been identified as an area facing ecological and climate-related risks. The Asian Development Bank committed financing for environmental management and climate-adaptation measures in the basin, which is home to more than one million people.

That background helps explain the region’s vulnerability but does not establish that any particular infrastructure or flood-management failure caused Thursday’s incident.

Flash-Flood Risk Remains

The collapse of the three-storey house illustrates how dangerous sudden torrents can become even when a tropical system is not at peak typhoon intensity.

Flash floods can rise rapidly after intense rainfall, particularly in mountainous terrain where runoff is channelled into rivers, streams and narrow valleys.

Authorities had warned of the risk of flash flooding in Fujian as the latest spell of severe weather affected southeastern China.

The available reporting does not provide a confirmed province-wide death toll connected specifically with Thursday’s flooding, and the absence of casualties reported at the Xianyou house should not be extrapolated to the entire storm-affected region.

Important Storm-Name Clarification

There is also an important naming issue in coverage of the storm.

Some reports refer to the 2026 system as “Soudelor.” However, Soudelor was the name of a destructive 2015 super typhoon that struck Taiwan and Fujian and was subsequently retired from the Western North Pacific tropical cyclone naming list.

Current specialist weather reporting identifies the 2026 system as Saudel, the replacement name adopted after Soudelor was retired.

Daily Evening News therefore uses Saudel when referring to the current 2026 tropical system, while noting that some source reporting uses the older Soudelor spelling.

As authorities continue assessing conditions across Fujian, the immediate concern remains additional heavy rainfall and the possibility of further flash floods and landslides in vulnerable areas.
