Federal Cabinet Committee Signals End to Dual Citizenship

Date:

Bureaucrats and judges may soon be barred from holding dual citizenship; decision expected Feb 16

Islamabad, Pakistan – Web Desk: The Federal Cabinet Committee has indicated a major policy shift, moving to end dual citizenship for bureaucrats and judges. During the National Assembly’s Standing Committee on Cabinet Secretariat meeting, committee members argued that if lawmakers cannot hold dual citizenship, bureaucrats should not enjoy this privilege either.

Member Noor Alam Khan raised the issue, stating that even if his sister or daughter held dual nationality, he would not associate with them in official matters. Minister of State Tahira Aurangzeb shared that her daughter, formerly an Australian national, relinquished her foreign citizenship to join parliament.

Committee members voted in favor of ending dual citizenship for bureaucrats and recommended that judges also be included in the policy. A final decision is scheduled for February 16, 2026. The Secretariat confirmed readiness to draft legislation if the Parliament approves the measure.

The committee also reviewed Pakistan’s participation in the Gaza Board of Peace and discussed proposals for secretariat staff allowances. The ruling is being hailed as a critical step toward ensuring transparency and fairness in government appointments.
