United States – Sports Desk: There’s a famous dialogue from a Shah Rukh Khan film: “Those who win despite losing are called performers.” Never has this phrase rung truer than for Cape Verde, the smallest nation ever to qualify for the FIFA World Cup.
Though Cape Verde couldn’t win the title, their courage, passion, and outstanding play won the hearts of football fans worldwide. In the Round of 32, the team suffered a thrilling 2-3 defeat against defending champions Argentina, yet their performance is being hailed as one of the tournament’s biggest successes.
Ranked 67th in the world, Cape Verde stunned everyone by keeping a clean sheet against European champions Spain in the group stage, and scored their first-ever World Cup goal against Uruguay. Against Argentina, despite Lionel Messi scoring, Cape Verde equalized twice — with Sydney Lopes Cabral’s spectacular strike becoming a highlight — but a cruel deflection in extra time ended their journey.
Head Coach Bubista said his team proved that even a small nation can compete fearlessly against the world’s best. The team’s 40-year-old goalkeeper, Vozinha, emerged as a hero with numerous saves against Spain and Argentina, totaling 18 saves — the third-best record in this World Cup. Former English stars Gary Neville and Ian Wright praised Cape Verde’s performance as inspiring for world football, saying such opportunities should be given to smaller nations to showcase their talent.
