JUI-F chief says opposition parties have agreed in principle to work towards a united opposition and develop a joint parliamentary strategy.
WEB DESK: Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman has announced plans to move towards the formation of a united opposition after meeting opposition leader Mahmood Khan Achakzai at Parliament House.
The announcement came after a meeting between the two opposition leaders at Achakzai’s chamber in the Parliament House.
Fazlur Rehman was accompanied by JUI-F leaders Kamran Murtaza and Maulana Wase, while Achakzai was joined by Akhunzada Hussain Yousafzai and Asad Qaiser.
Opposition agrees in principle on joint parliamentary role
Speaking to journalists after the meeting, Fazlur Rehman said consultations had taken place with the opposition leaders in both the Senate and National Assembly.
He said there was an agreement in principle that opposition parties should move towards a united opposition and play a joint parliamentary role.
“Further consultations will continue,” Fazlur Rehman said, adding that more meetings would be held to develop the proposed political arrangement.
He also expressed hope that the initiative would provide a positive beginning and said an environment should be created for an all-parties conference of opposition groups.
Fazlur Rehman comments on Imran Khan’s treatment
Before meeting Achakzai, Fazlur Rehman told reporters that if the matter had been in his hands, PTI founder Imran Khan would have already received treatment.
His comments came amid ongoing political and legal developments surrounding Khan’s medical treatment and the Supreme Court’s recent proceedings concerning his proposed transfer to a private hospital.
PPP’s inclusion remains unclear
When asked whether the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) would also be included in the proposed opposition alliance, Fazlur Rehman said the party was currently part of the government.
His response leaves the question of PPP’s participation open as opposition parties continue consultations over the proposed alliance.
The latest development could mark a significant shift in parliamentary politics if opposition groups succeed in coordinating their positions and establishing a common strategy on major legislative and political issues.
Further meetings and consultations are expected before the proposed united opposition takes a formal shape.
