PM Carney Confirms No FTA with China, Responding to Trump’s Tariff Warning
Ottawa, Canada, Web Desk: Following threats from US President Donald Trump, Canada has clearly ruled out any free trade agreement (FTA) with China. Trump had warned that Canadian goods could face 100% tariffs if Ottawa pursued a trade deal with Beijing. Prime Minister Mark Carney clarified that recent negotiations with China involve limited tariff reductions in specific sectors, not a full FTA. The move aligns with existing US-Mexico-Canada trade rules, which require notification before engaging in agreements with non-market economies. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent also emphasized that America will not allow Chinese goods to enter US markets via Canada. Canada has previously imposed tariffs on Chinese EVs, steel, and aluminum, prompting retaliatory taxes on Canadian products by China. Partial tariff relief on Chinese EVs does not constitute a free trade deal, according to Ottawa.
