Pakistan captain Shaheen Shah Afridi admits the offence after the team falls one over short against Sri Lanka in Lahore.
LAHORE, PAKISTAN — WEB DESK: Pakistan have been fined five per cent of their match fees by the International Cricket Council (ICC) for maintaining a slow over-rate during their ODI tri-series final victory against Sri Lanka in Lahore.
The penalty was imposed after Pakistan were found to be one over short of the required rate, even after time allowances were taken into consideration.
According to the ICC announcement on November 2, Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees member Jeff Crowe imposed the sanction following the October 31 final at Gaddafi Stadium.
Shaheen Shah Afridi accepts ICC sanction
Pakistan captain Shaheen Shah Afridi pleaded guilty to the slow over-rate offence and accepted the proposed sanction.
Consequently, no formal hearing was required.
The charge was levelled by on-field umpires Ahsan Raza and Wayne Knights, third umpire Sharfuddoula Ibne Shahid and fourth umpire Rashid Riaz.
What does the ICC rule say?
The penalty was imposed under Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel.
Under this provision, players are fined five per cent of their match fees for every over their team fails to bowl within the allotted time.
Since Pakistan were found to be one over short, the team received a five per cent fine.
Pakistan beat Sri Lanka to win tri-series
The disciplinary action came despite Pakistan securing an impressive three-wicket victory over Sri Lanka to lift the ODI tri-series trophy.
Sri Lanka posted 325 runs for the loss of eight wickets in their allotted 50 overs.
Pakistan successfully chased the target of 326, reaching 331 for seven in 48.3 overs with nine balls remaining.
Opener Fakhar Zaman led the chase with an outstanding 127 off 99 deliveries, including 11 fours and six sixes.
The century was Fakhar’s 12th in One-Day International cricket and played a crucial role in Pakistan’s title-winning performance.
The victory also provided Pakistan with a significant boost as they continue preparations for the next ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup.
