Islamabad, Pakistan – (Web Desk) Pakistan Test captain Babar Azam has made it clear that he will not compromise on discipline, fitness, and performance as he begins a new chapter leading the national side in red-ball cricket.
Speaking in an exclusive interview on Straight Drive with Salman Butt, Babar said he has learned valuable lessons from his previous stint as captain and is determined to lead the team with greater maturity, improved planning, and a positive mindset.
“My main focus is on three things: discipline, fitness and performance. These will matter a lot for me as captain and for the team going forward,” Babar said, adding that while he always backs his players, these standards are non-negotiable.
The Pakistan skipper described the opportunity to captain the national Test side as a great honour, saying experience has helped him develop stronger leadership qualities.
“I have learnt a lot from my previous experience as captain and also from my time as a player. With time, you gain maturity and clarity. This time, I believe I am better prepared to lead the team,” he said.
Reflecting on his earlier tenure, Babar admitted that every captain learns from both successful and difficult decisions.
“When you review your decisions, you understand where improvements are needed. I have rebuilt my mindset, gained more clarity, and taken every experience positively,” he added.
Babar praised Pakistan’s emerging Test squad, highlighting the inclusion of several top performers from domestic cricket. He stressed that supporting young players during challenging phases is one of his key responsibilities.
“This is a young team. As a senior player and captain, my role is to keep players relaxed, back them in difficult situations, and help them handle the pressure of international cricket,” he said.
The Pakistan captain also highlighted the importance of the recently concluded National Cricket Academy (NCA) Red-Ball Camp, saying it focused on improving fitness, fielding, patience, and mental strength ahead of challenging overseas assignments.
According to Babar, the coaching staff worked extensively on helping players deal with pressure situations, respond to different match scenarios, and execute game plans effectively in Test cricket.
Looking ahead to Pakistan’s upcoming tours of the West Indies and England, Babar expressed confidence that the team has prepared according to expected playing conditions.
“The West Indies tour will be challenging, but we have prepared accordingly. Many of our players also have county cricket experience in England, which will benefit the team,” he said.
Discussing his batting philosophy, Babar emphasized that he always prioritises the team’s needs over personal milestones.
“When I go out to bat, I focus on what the team requires. Whether the situation demands attacking cricket or defensive batting, I always try to play according to the team’s requirements,” he stated.
Responding to criticism, the Pakistan captain said constructive feedback is always welcome, while negativity is best ignored.
He also encouraged aspiring young cricketers to believe in themselves, remain consistent with their routines, and continue working hard, stressing that success comes through patience and continuous improvement.
Babar concluded by thanking Pakistan’s passionate cricket fans for their unwavering support and expressed hope that the young Test squad would meet expectations during the upcoming international assignments.
