Niamey, Niger – Web Desk: At least 50 people have died of thirst after their vehicle broke down in Niger’s Sahara Desert, according to international media reports.
The victims were reportedly returning from neighboring Mali following the Eid al-Adha holidays when their truck became stranded in a remote area of the vast desert.
Reports said the group was left trapped under extreme heat conditions, and their limited water supply was eventually exhausted. As temperatures soared, dozens succumbed to dehydration while waiting for help.
Only two people survived the ordeal. According to reports, the survivors managed to walk across the desert and reach a nearby settlement, where they alerted authorities to the tragedy.
The incident highlights the dangers faced by travelers crossing remote stretches of the Sahara Desert, where extreme temperatures, limited infrastructure, and long distances between settlements can quickly turn vehicle breakdowns into life-threatening emergencies.
Authorities are continuing to gather information about the victims and the circumstances surrounding the incident.
