Allegations of Irregularities in West Bengal Elections 2026

Date:

New Delhi, India – Web Desk: The 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections have triggered a heated political debate across India, with allegations of electoral irregularities and concerns over democratic transparency following the reported victory of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

After the long tenure of the Trinamool Congress led by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, opposition parties and political observers have raised questions about the fairness of the electoral process.

According to opposition claims, nearly 9 million voters—around 12 percent of the total electorate—were removed from voter lists under a Special Intensive Revision process ahead of the elections. It is alleged that a majority of the deleted names belonged to Muslim and Dalit communities.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has accused the Election Commission of engaging in what she described as an “unethical process,” alleging targeted exclusion of minority voters.

Statements by BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari have also resurfaced, drawing criticism from opposition groups who say they reflect a hardline political stance against minority communities.

The deployment of more than 250,000 central security personnel during the elections has also been questioned, with critics suggesting it may have influenced the political environment.

Following the announcement of results, reports of post-poll violence, arson attacks on political offices, clashes among party workers, and rising communal tensions have further escalated concerns.

There have also been isolated reports of street name changes and the replacement of minority-linked signage with religious symbols in certain areas, adding to the controversy surrounding the election outcome.

Authorities have yet to issue a comprehensive response to the allegations.
