Abdul El-Sayed Makes History as First Muslim Elected to US Senate

Democrat Abdul El-Sayed defeats Republican Mike Rogers in Michigan’s Senate election, marking a historic milestone for Muslim representation in American politics.

DETROIT: Democrat Abdul El-Sayed has won Michigan’s closely watched US Senate election, becoming the first Muslim elected to the United States Senate in American history.

The 42-year-old former public health official defeated Republican candidate Mike Rogers in the November 3 midterm elections, securing a historic victory in a competitive race for a seat previously held by retiring Democratic Senator Gary Peters.

El-Sayed declared victory during an election-night gathering in Detroit, expressing pride in his achievement and thanking supporters for their backing.

His victory marks a significant milestone for Muslim representation in American national politics and gives Democrats an important Senate seat as they seek to strengthen their position in Congress.

Born in Michigan to Egyptian immigrant parents, El-Sayed built his professional career in medicine and public health before entering politics. He previously served as director of the Detroit Health Department and Wayne County’s health department.

During his Senate campaign, El-Sayed focused on healthcare affordability, economic inequality and reducing the influence of corporate money in American politics. He also advocated expanding healthcare access and changing US policy towards military assistance to Israel.

The campaign became particularly contentious as his Muslim identity attracted significant attention. President Donald Trump and other Republican figures publicly questioned his background, while El-Sayed rejected allegations connecting him to extremism.

Rogers, a former congressman and FBI agent, challenged El-Sayed in the closely contested Michigan race but ultimately failed to secure the seat.

The election result comes amid broader Democratic gains in the 2026 midterm elections, with the party making significant advances in congressional contests across the country.

El-Sayed’s victory represents a historic development for Muslim Americans, who have long sought greater representation in the country’s highest political institutions.
