Democratic victories in the 2026 US midterm elections strengthen the party’s position in Congress as voters deliver a major electoral setback to President Donald Trump and Republicans.
WASHINGTON: Democrats have won control of both chambers of the United States Congress in the November 3 midterm elections, delivering a major setback to President Donald Trump and the Republican Party.
The Democratic victories marked a significant shift in the balance of political power in Washington, with the opposition party making substantial gains in traditionally Republican states and competitive congressional districts.
Democrats secured several important Senate victories, including races in Texas, Iowa, Kansas, Ohio, Maine, North Carolina and South Carolina. These results helped the party take control of the Senate after Republicans previously held a 53-47 majority.
In the House of Representatives, Democrats also overturned Republican-held seats, including districts that had strongly supported Trump in the 2024 presidential election.
The election results reflected growing voter concerns about economic conditions, rising living costs, the Iran war and government corruption. Higher fuel prices and inflation-related pressures also featured prominently in the election campaign.
The change in congressional control is expected to create significant challenges for Trump’s administration during the final two years of his presidency.
With Democrats controlling both chambers, the party will have greater authority to oversee government operations, conduct investigations and challenge the administration’s legislative priorities.
Democratic House leader Hakeem Jeffries is also positioned to become the first Black speaker of the House if elected by the new Democratic majority.
Trump, meanwhile, congratulated Democratic candidates for their victories but rejected the suggestion that the results represented a personal setback. He praised their campaigns while placing responsibility for Republican defeats on individual candidates.
The election outcome marks a new phase in American politics, with Democrats preparing to use their congressional majority to increase oversight of the administration and challenge its policies.
The results also highlight the political consequences of economic dissatisfaction and foreign policy decisions as the United States enters the next stage of Trump’s second presidential term.
