Professor Arif Saqi says Konain Shah apologised during a meeting at his Karachi residence and that compensation was made for damage to his nephew’s car.
WEB DESK: University of Karachi Professor Arif Khan Saqi has said he has reconciled with Konain Shah, who is accused in an assault case involving the professor, after the two met at Saqi’s residence in Karachi.
Professor Saqi told Geo News that he had forgiven Shah following the meeting. According to sources cited by Geo News, Shah visited Saqi’s home on Sunday night and apologised to him. Shah is currently on bail in the assault case.
Professor Saqi confirms reconciliation
Speaking to Geo News, Saqi said Shah’s father had also visited his home on several occasions before the latest meeting.
“I have reconciled with accused Konain Shah,” Saqi said, according to Geo News.
He also said compensation had been made for damage caused to his nephew’s car during the incident.
Another report by Aaj English TV also said Shah apologised during the meeting and that the two sides subsequently reached a settlement, citing sources.
What happened in the assault case?
The case stems from an incident near Karachi’s Safoora Chowrangi on September 8, when a collision involving a double-cabin vehicle and an online taxi escalated into a confrontation.
The taxi was being used by Professor Saqi and belonged to his nephew, Waheedur Rehman.
According to Saqi’s account reported by Geo News, the double-cabin vehicle was leaving a parking area when guards signalled the taxi to stop. The vehicle then reversed and struck the taxi.
Saqi said he asked those in the double-cabin vehicle to compensate the taxi driver for the damage. He alleged that the hotel owner’s son subsequently emerged from the vehicle, fired two shots and struck him with pistol butts before firing into the air.
Saqi also alleged that he and his nephew were taken to a hotel and assaulted there.
These details are allegations made by Saqi and are part of the police case; they should not be treated as established findings unless proven through the legal process.
Police case and legal proceedings
Police registered a case at Sachal police station on Saqi’s complaint against Konain and others.
According to police, the case includes charges relating to attempted murder, assault, causing injuries and wrongful confinement.
Konain Shah had earlier obtained interim pre-arrest bail from a Malir court. The court directed him to join the investigation.
Police subsequently arrested Shah in connection with the case, while separate proceedings also emerged over alleged threats made against Professor Saqi.
A Sindh district court release writ dated September 15 also records Shah’s release on bail in the separate threats case.
