Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui says Pakistan needs new administrative units and an end to hereditary politics; Farooq Sattar calls for six units in Sindh.
Web Desk: Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) Chairman Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui has called for the creation of new administrative units in Pakistan, saying the country needs to move away from hereditary and dynastic politics.
Speaking at a press conference at the party’s temporary headquarters on Monday, Siddiqui said the issue of administrative restructuring would not be resolved through parliament alone. He also called for a fresh census and urged the courts to examine what he described as the way Sindh has been governed since 1917.
MQM-P says administrative restructuring is needed
Siddiqui described a large MQM-P rally held in Karachi a day earlier as a public expression of support for the party’s position.
He said the rally demonstrated that people wanted changes in the country’s administrative structure, while arguing that what he termed “feudal democracy” could not determine Pakistan’s future. These remarks represent the MQM-P chairman’s political position.
Siddiqui said the demand for new administrative units was not limited to MQM-P and described it as a matter concerning Pakistan more broadly.
Fresh census demanded
The MQM-P chief also called for a fresh population census.
He linked the census demand to questions surrounding representation and administration in Sindh and urged the judiciary to take notice of the province’s governance structure.
The party has campaigned for administrative restructuring for decades. Siddiqui said MQM-P had faced pressure over the issue and referred to the difficulties experienced by the party and some of its senior leaders.
Farooq Sattar calls for six units in Sindh
Senior MQM-P leader Farooq Sattar separately reaffirmed the party’s demand, saying six administrative units would eventually be created in Sindh.
Sattar made the remark while addressing the same press conference attended by several senior MQM-P leaders, including Waseem Akhtar, Nasreen Jalil, Ali Khursheedi, Muhammad Hussain and Waseem Aftab.
The proposal is a political demand by MQM-P and does not represent an announced government decision to create six administrative units in Sindh.
Party convention announced
Siddiqui also announced that MQM-P would hold its convention on October 4 in District West.
The latest statements come a day after the party held a large rally in Karachi as part of its campaign for administrative restructuring
