Israeli Strike Kills Two in Southern Lebanon as Tensions Escalate
BEIRUT, LEBANON — WEB DESK: An Israeli strike in southern Lebanon killed two people near Nabatieh as military activity intensified in the area despite efforts to contain fighting between Israel and Hezbollah.
Lebanon’s Ministry of Public Health said the strike targeted a motorcycle in the Kfar Reman area. Lebanon’s state-run National News Agency reported that two young men riding the motorcycle were killed, with their bodies later taken to a local hospital.
The attack occurred near the strategic Ali al-Taher ridge, an area that has become a significant focus of military activity in southern Lebanon. Israel announced on Thursday that its forces had secured the ridge and cleared Hezbollah fighters from tunnels beneath the area. Hezbollah had not publicly confirmed losing control of the position at the time of the reports.
Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz said Israeli forces would act to prevent hostile forces from re-establishing themselves in the area. The Israeli military’s operations around the ridge come amid heightened regional tensions and continuing disputes over implementation of ceasefire arrangements.
Lebanon’s NNA also reported an increase in Israeli attacks around Nabatieh. The reported operations extended to other areas of southern Lebanon, including the village of Ramadiyeh in the Tyre district, more than 10 kilometres from the Israeli border.
The latest violence comes amid broader tensions involving Israel, Hezbollah and Iran. Reuters reported this week that Iran had warned the United States it would respond forcefully to an Israeli offensive against the Ali al-Taher ridge, where Iranian military personnel were reportedly present alongside Hezbollah fighters.
The situation remains volatile as military operations continue alongside diplomatic efforts aimed at preventing another major escalation along the Israel-Lebanon front.
