Chisinau, Moldova – (Web Desk) Moldova’s Prime Minister Alexandru Montiano has unexpectedly resigned from office, ending his tenure after serving as the country’s head of government since November 2025.
According to media reports, Montiano announced his resignation, saying he could no longer continue performing his duties in line with his personal principles and values. However, he did not disclose specific reasons behind his decision.
His resignation comes amid growing public and political criticism over alleged irregularities and high executive salaries at the state-owned air navigation company MoldATSA. Local media reports suggest the controversy placed significant pressure on the government and may have contributed to his decision to step down.
Following the announcement, President Maia Sandu praised Montiano’s service and confirmed that he will continue to serve as caretaker prime minister until a new head of government is appointed.
President Sandu also announced that consultations with parliamentary parties will begin next week to pave the way for the formation of a new government.
Political analysts believe the resignation presents a major challenge for President Sandu and her pro-European Party of Action and Solidarity (PAS) at a time when Moldova is pursuing European Union membership while navigating an increasingly complex regional geopolitical environment.
The political transition is expected to be closely monitored both domestically and internationally as Moldova continues its reform agenda and efforts toward European integration.
