Beirut, Lebanon – Web Desk: Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz has claimed that Israeli forces have taken control of the historic Beaufort Castle in southern Lebanon, describing the development as a “strategic victory.”
According to Katz, the operation was carried out by the Golani Brigade, during which Israeli forces reportedly crossed the Litani River and advanced deeper into Lebanese territory.
In a statement posted on the messaging platform Telegram, Katz said the operation was conducted under the direction of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and marked an expansion of Israeli military activity in Lebanon.
He added that after crossing the Litani River, Israeli forces secured the Beaufort ridge, which he described as a strategically important position for the defence of Israel’s northern Galilee region.
The defence minister also stated that the operation had initially been subject to an information blackout, but details were now being disclosed. He further claimed that fighting in the area is ongoing, and that Israel will continue operations aimed at weakening Hezbollah’s capabilities and securing its northern border.
Lebanese authorities have not yet issued an official response to the Israeli claims.
Beaufort Castle, a medieval Crusader-era fortress located in Lebanon’s Nabatieh Governorate above the Litani River, is considered a site of historical and strategic significance in the region.
