UNITED NATIONS – Web Desk: The United Nations has issued a grave warning to the world regarding a serious and potential threat of nuclear terrorism emanating from Afghanistan.
According to the UN Counter-Terrorism Centre, 133 pellets containing uranium dioxide, stolen from Tajikistan, could fall into the hands of Al-Qaeda operatives based in Afghanistan. “The risk of nuclear terrorism is greater today than ever before,” the report stated.
The report notes that Al-Qaeda has repeatedly expressed intent to carry out nuclear terrorism, and in multiple incidents, radioactive materials have been smuggled or stolen. Experts have consistently highlighted that the UN, the United States, Pakistan, European, and Central Asian nations have repeatedly identified terrorism flourishing from Afghanistan as a serious threat.
Terrorists in Afghanistan, equipped with modern technology and foreign fighters, are creating a genuine risk of nuclear terrorism. The Afghan Taliban regime, in order to maintain its oppressive dominance, has provided safe haven to terrorist organizations from around the world. These global terrorist groups, operating under the Taliban’s umbrella in Afghanistan, have become a major threat to international security.
