Karachi, Pakistan – Web Desk: A meeting of the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) City Council turned tense after government and opposition members clashed during a session chaired by Murtaza Wahab, the Mayor of Karachi.
The session began with the presentation and approval of a resolution expressing prayers for the elevation of the ranks of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran’s Supreme Leader.
During the meeting, opposition leader Saifuddin Advocate criticized the presence of United States military bases in Gulf states and said Pakistan should reconsider its position on the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) “peace board” framework.
Meanwhile, parliamentary leader of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf in the council, Mubashir Ahmed, condemned the reported U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran and praised the Iranian nation for what he described as resilience and courage.
Council member Karamullah Waqasi said Ayatollah Khamenei had been “martyred” and called for unity across the Muslim world.
During Waqasi’s speech, opposition members staged loud protests and chanted slogans, leading to heated exchanges between treasury and opposition members inside the council hall.
Despite the disruptions, the council also approved several resolutions, including expressing sympathy with victims of the Gul Plaza building collapse in Karachi.
Other decisions included upgrading the position of a senior therapist at Abbasi Shaheed Hospital to Grade BS-18, approving the full use of user charges in KMC hospitals, revising medical oxygen gas prices for healthcare institutions, and establishing a fresh animal sale section at the municipal cattle pound.
The meeting concluded after repeated disruptions and protests from opposition members.
