US President Trump threatens Canada with steep tariffs over Beijing trade pact
Beijing, China | Web Desk – US President Donald Trump issued a stern warning to Canada on Saturday, stating that any trade deal with China could trigger 100% tariffs on Canadian goods entering the United States.
Trump criticized Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, accusing him of turning Canada into a “drop-off port” for Chinese products and undermining North American security by opposing US missile defense projects.
This escalation follows a trade agreement signed between China and Canada in Beijing on January 16, 2026, covering sectors including electric vehicles and agriculture. China has reduced tariffs on Canadian canola oil from 85% to 15%, effective March 1, while Canada agreed to a 6.1% tariff on Chinese electric vehicles.
The announcement highlights rising tensions in North America over trade and geopolitical alignment, as Trump vows to block any Chinese products from entering the US via Canada.
