T20 World Cup: ICC Rejects Bangladesh Request to Play Outside India

Date:

Conflicting claims emerge after ICC–BCB meeting as Bangladesh seeks clarity over security concerns ahead of the T20 World Cup in India.

Uncertainty has surfaced over Bangladesh’s participation in the upcoming men’s T20 World Cup in India, following conflicting accounts of a key virtual meeting between the International Cricket Council (ICC) and the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB).

According to a report by ESPNcricinfo, the ICC informed the BCB that its request to stage Bangladesh’s World Cup matches outside India due to security concerns had been rejected. The ICC reportedly warned that Bangladesh must travel to India to participate in the tournament or risk forfeiting points.

BCB Denies Receiving Ultimatum

The Bangladesh Cricket Board has denied receiving any ultimatum, stating that no warning regarding points forfeiture was conveyed during the virtual call held on Tuesday.

So far, neither the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) nor the BCB has issued an official statement clarifying the outcome of the discussions.

Why Bangladesh Approached the ICC

The ICC arranged the meeting after the BCB wrote to the governing body on Sunday, requesting it to “consider” moving Bangladesh’s matches outside India. The issue has arisen less than a month before the 20-team men’s T20 World Cup, scheduled to run from February 7 to March 8, with matches hosted across India and Sri Lanka.

Bangladesh’s Group and Match Schedule

Bangladesh, placed in Group C, are scheduled to play their first three matches in Kolkata:

  • vs West Indies on February 7
  • vs Italy on February 9
  • vs England on February 14

Their final group-stage match is set against Nepal in Mumbai on February 17.

Mustafizur Rahman Factor

The BCB’s request to the ICC was reportedly triggered by a separate development involving fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman.

The BCCI instructed Kolkata Knight Riders to release Mustafizur after he was bought at the 2026 IPL auction for INR 9.2 crore, a decision publicly communicated by BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia without an official explanation. Mustafizur was the only Bangladesh player selected in the auction.

Reports suggest the IPL Governing Council did not meet to discuss the release, raising questions about the decision-making process and further complicating the situation amid sensitivities surrounding Bangladesh’s tour to India.

ICC Seeks Details on Security Concerns

Sources say the ICC has since asked the BCB to formally outline its security concerns. An email seeking clarification was reportedly received late Monday night, with the Bangladesh board preparing a detailed response expected to be submitted soon.

As preparations for the tournament continue, stakeholders now await formal communication from the ICC to determine whether Bangladesh’s participation will proceed as scheduled.
