emen Says Houthis Fired 14 Ballistic Missiles in Major West Coast Attack

ADEN, YEMEN — WEB DESK: Yemen’s government-aligned forces said the Houthi movement launched 14 ballistic missiles and multiple drones towards populated areas and military fronts in the western provinces of Taiz and Hodeidah on Thursday, marking a significant escalation in renewed fighting inside the country.

The Yemeni Armed Forces Media Center, citing a military source, said air-defence systems intercepted several drones over the Taiz front and other districts along the western coast. The military said the ballistic missiles failed to hit positions occupied by government-aligned forces in the area.

The original Express report similarly said the attacks involved 14 ballistic missiles and drones, but provided no confirmed details of casualties or material damage.

Attack Reported Across Taiz and Hodeidah

The reported barrage targeted areas along Yemen’s Red Sea coast in Taiz and Hodeidah provinces, according to government forces.

The military said several incoming drones were brought down using recently acquired air-defence capabilities. It added that the ballistic missiles did not affect the operational positions of forces deployed along the western coast.

Government forces also reported continuing ground clashes with the Houthis in western Taiz.

According to the military account, government-aligned forces responded to sources of hostile fire in the Al-Kadaha sector of the Al-Barh front, where reciprocal fighting was reported.

No independently verified casualty figure from Thursday’s missile and drone attacks was available at the time of publication.

Critical Attribution: Attack Report Comes From Government Forces

Although some headlines have described the incident as the Houthis “claiming” to have launched 14 missiles, the available reporting points to an important distinction.

The 14-missile figure was announced by Yemen’s government-aligned Armed Forces Media Center, not presented in the reports reviewed as a direct Houthi statement claiming responsibility for all 14 launches.

Express also attributes the operational details to the Yemeni military source.

Daily Evening News therefore uses the more precise formulation: Yemeni government forces say the Houthis launched 14 ballistic missiles and multiple drones.

That distinction is important in conflict reporting because battlefield claims from either side may be difficult to verify independently.

No Confirmed Casualties or Major Damage

There were no immediately confirmed reports of casualties from the barrage in the sources reviewed.

The government military source said the ballistic missiles did not strike the positions of forces deployed on the western coast, while air defences intercepted several drones.

However, this does not establish that all 14 missiles were intercepted.

The military’s statement says the missiles did not hit its positions; it does not provide a complete missile-by-missile accounting or establish where every projectile ultimately landed.

The Express report also noted that no further details about possible human or material losses had been provided.

It would therefore be premature to report that the entire attack was neutralised or caused zero damage across the affected region.

Fighting Intensifies After Years of Relative Lull

The attack comes amid a renewed escalation in Yemen’s long-running conflict.

The Houthis seized the capital, Sanaa, in 2014, prompting military intervention the following year by a Saudi-led coalition supporting Yemen’s internationally recognised government.

A United Nations-mediated truce beginning in April 2022 substantially reduced large-scale hostilities. Although the formal truce later expired, fighting between the main Yemeni parties remained considerably lower than during earlier phases of the war.

That relative calm has come under increasing pressure in 2026.

Recent fighting has been reported in Taiz, Marib, Al-Jawf and Al-Dhalea, while the western coast has again become an important military flashpoint.

The latest barrage is therefore significant primarily as part of an escalation in Yemen’s internal front lines, rather than simply another Houthi operation against foreign shipping or Israel.

Red Sea Security Concerns Remain

The western fighting also carries broader regional implications because Yemen sits alongside the Bab al-Mandab, the narrow maritime passage connecting the Red Sea with the Gulf of Aden.

Yemen’s government has argued that expanded Houthi military capabilities pose a threat not only to domestic security but also to international shipping and regional trade routes.

Information Minister Moammar Eryani called for greater international political, military, security and intelligence support for the government, arguing that the Houthi threat extended beyond Yemen.

Those comments represent the Yemeni government’s assessment and should not be treated as an independent finding regarding the intentions behind Thursday’s attacks.

The immediate targets reported on Thursday were areas of western Yemen, rather than commercial ships in the Red Sea.

No Evidence 14 Missiles Hit Their Targets

The scale of the reported barrage is notable, but its effectiveness remains unclear.

Government forces say none of the 14 ballistic missiles hit their military positions, while several drones were intercepted.

No independent battlefield assessment has yet established how many missiles reached their intended target areas, where the remaining missiles landed or whether civilian infrastructure was damaged.

Similarly, no verified casualty toll had emerged from the specific attack at the time of reporting.

The incident nevertheless adds to concerns that Yemen could move towards a broader resumption of internal warfare after several years in which the major front lines remained comparatively stable.
