Washington, United States – Web Desk: The United States has withdrawn hundreds of military personnel from key bases in Qatar and Bahrain amid rising tensions with Iran, the New York Times reported, citing US officials.
The precautionary move involved personnel transfers from Qatar’s Al Udeid Air Base and facilities linked to the US Navy’s Fifth Fleet in Bahrain. Al Udeid is the largest US military base in the Middle East, hosting around 10,000 personnel and serving as a central hub for US air operations in the region.
US officials said the decision was taken to protect troops from potential sudden escalation and should not be seen as preparation for an imminent conflict. US forces remain deployed across Iraq, Syria, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Jordan and the United Arab Emirates.
US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff said President Donald Trump had questioned why Iran had not “surrendered” despite the buildup of US military and naval power.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said further talks could take place in Geneva if Tehran presents its nuclear-related proposals within 48 hours. Oman’s Foreign Minister Badr bin Hamad Al Busaidi also confirmed that US-Iran negotiations are expected in Geneva.
Meanwhile, Iranian commander Ali Jahanshahi said Iranian forces are monitoring enemy movements and would respond decisively to any aggression. Reports suggest sanctions relief and possible US investment in Iran’s oil sector are under discussion, though Tehran has reiterated it will not relinquish control over its oil and mineral resources.
