US Strikes Oil Tanker in Gulf of Oman Carrying Iranian Oil; 3 Indian Crew Missing

Date:

NEW DELHI – Web Desk: The US military has struck a commercial oil tanker in the Gulf of Oman, accusing it of carrying Iranian oil in violation of sanctions, leaving three Indian crew members missing, according to international media reports.

US Central Command (CENTCOM) stated that the engine of the Palau-flagged oil and chemical tanker “Stability” was targeted after the vessel ignored US warnings. The ship was rendered inoperable following the strike. India’s Ministry of External Affairs confirmed that 21 of the 24 Indian crew members have been safely rescued, while three remain missing. The Indian embassy in Oman is coordinating rescue operations with local authorities.

India summoned the US Deputy Chief of Mission to file a formal protest, demanding an immediate halt to targeting commercial vessels and civilian infrastructure in the region. The UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) reported that the tanker notified a fire in the engine room approximately 20 nautical miles northeast of Oman’s Sohar port. Oman’s navy launched immediate rescue operations after receiving distress signals.

The US began its naval blockade on April 13, citing Iran’s disruption of international shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. Since then, US forces have disabled 8 vessels that ignored US orders, diverted 134 ships, and allowed 42 aid vessels to pass.
