WASHINGTON – Web Desk: Diplomatic efforts for a ceasefire agreement between the US and Iran continue despite escalating tensions and recent military strikes, with a Qatari delegation heading to Tehran after consultations with the US, according to CNN.
A US official told CNN that Qatari negotiators departed for Tehran after consultations with the US to try to finalize a potential US-Iran agreement. A senior Iranian official told CNN that frozen assets are the biggest obstacle in the talks, and for any final agreement, the US would need to agree to release approximately $24 billion in frozen Iranian assets. Iran has proposed that $12 billion be released in the initial phase, with the remaining amount provided later.
Iran has consistently maintained that reaching a comprehensive agreement would be impossible without clear progress on these frozen assets. The Qatari visit is seen as an indication that communication between the two countries has not been completely severed and mediation efforts continue.
