US sends additional patriot batteries to Saudi Arabia and Qatar

Date:

Two additional US Patriot batteries were reportedly deployed to protect key Saudi and Qatari oil and gas facilities amid tensions with Iran.

Web Desk: The United States has reportedly deployed two additional Patriot missile batteries to Saudi Arabia and Qatar to protect key oil and gas facilities amid heightened tensions with Iran.

The deployments were reported by Axios, which cited two US officials and a regional source. According to the report, one Patriot battery was sent to Saudi Arabia last month to protect a major oil facility, while another was deployed to Qatar to defend a natural gas installation.

The reported deployments come as Washington considers the possibility of renewed major military operations against Iran.

Patriot Batteries Sent to Gulf Energy Sites

According to Axios, the additional air-defence systems are intended to reassure Saudi Arabia and Qatar that their critical energy infrastructure would receive US protection if major US combat operations against Iran resume.

The report said Saudi Arabia received one battery to protect a key oil facility, while Qatar received another to defend a natural gas facility.

A spokesman for US Central Command, Capt. Tim Hawkins, declined to comment on the reported deployments.

Concerns Over Iranian Retaliation

Axios reported that Saudi and Qatari leaders had urged US President Donald Trump in August not to launch a major attack that could include strikes on Iranian energy infrastructure.

According to US officials cited by Axios, concerns that Iran could retaliate against Gulf oil and gas facilities were an important factor in Washington’s decision at the time to pursue economic pressure rather than launch the reported attack.

The report also said the United States would need Saudi Arabia’s permission to use its airspace if major military operations against Iran resumed.

Trump Signals Possible Renewed Action

The Patriot deployments come as Trump has publicly discussed the possibility of renewed military action against Iran.

The Express Tribune reported that Trump said Thursday he was considering resuming a bombing campaign in the coming weeks, while warning that Iran would face severe consequences if it did not reach an agreement with Washington.

The reported air-defence deployments therefore come against a broader backdrop of heightened US military activity in the Middle East.

US Military Presence Expands

Axios also reported that Washington is sending additional warships, aircraft and troops to the region.

A US official cited in the report said the USS Theodore Roosevelt and its strike group had departed San Diego and were expected to reach the region around mid-November. The Makin Island Amphibious Ready Group, carrying thousands of Marines from the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit, was also reported to be heading toward the region.

The precise operational role and deployment arrangements for these forces were not fully disclosed.

Regional Air Defence Cooperation

US Central Command has previously described efforts to strengthen integrated air-defence cooperation with regional partners, including countries operating Patriot systems.

CENTCOM’s 2026 posture statement said the US had established combined air-defence coordination structures with Patriot-equipped partners and deployed US Army air-defence teams to support readiness and coordination.

The latest reported deployments would add to those regional air-defence arrangements, although the US government has not publicly confirmed the specific Patriot movements described by Axios.
