US Moves B-1 Bombers From UK Base Over Suspected Iran Drone Threat

WASHINGTON, UNITED STATES — WEB DESK: The United States has withdrawn B-1 strategic bombers from RAF Fairford in Britain after intelligence raised concerns over a possible Iranian-linked drone attack targeting the military installation.

Around a dozen B-1B Lancer bombers were removed from the British base as a precaution amid heightened security concerns. The aircraft have returned to their home stations in the United States, while American officials have stressed that the redeployment does not prevent the bomber force from conducting long-range operations if required.

The security concerns intensified following a series of intelligence warnings and arrests connected with a suspected plot targeting RAF Fairford. British counterterrorism authorities are continuing their investigation, with multiple people having been detained in connection with the case.

Investigators found petrol during earlier arrests near the airbase, but no drones or explosives were recovered. Authorities are examining whether the incidents were connected to a wider plan targeting the facility.

Concerns surrounding a possible Iranian role remain under investigation. Tehran has denied involvement in the alleged plot.

The episode has also highlighted growing concerns over the vulnerability of expensive military aircraft and installations to relatively inexpensive unmanned aerial systems. Small drones can potentially be launched close to their targets, making conventional early-warning and air-defence systems more difficult to employ effectively.

RAF Fairford is an important facility for US bomber deployments in Europe and has hosted American long-range aircraft, including B-1 bombers.

Despite the withdrawal, the US retains the ability to operate its strategic bomber fleet from bases outside Britain. B-1, B-2 and B-52 aircraft can conduct long-range missions originating from the continental United States.

The investigation in Britain remains active, and authorities have not publicly established that Iran carried out or directly ordered an attempted drone attack against RAF Fairford.
