US Launches Major Airstrikes on Iran, Hits Dozens of Military Targets

Date:

Washington D.C. – Web Desk: The US Central Command (CENTCOM) announced on Saturday that it had conducted another major aerial operation against Iranian military targets on July 12, striking dozens of locations with advanced precision-guided munitions . The operation marks the latest escalation in the ongoing conflict between the two nations, which has intensified since the collapse of the June ceasefire agreement.

According to a CENTCOM statement, the strikes targeted Iran’s air defense systems, coastal radar installations, missile and drone capabilities, small military vessels, and other military infrastructure . The operation involved US fighter jets, naval warships, aerial drones, and maritime drones to degrade Iranian military capacity.

Strategic Objective: Strait of Hormuz
CENTCOM stated the operation’s objective was to limit Iran’s ability to threaten international commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most critical maritime chokepoints through which a significant portion of global oil and commercial goods transit. The command emphasized that US forces remain “fully prepared” to protect safe passage and freedom of navigation in the region.

US Accuses Iran of Aggression
The US military accused Iran of “continuous aggression, harassment, and threats” in the region, stating these activities endanger international maritime trade and regional security. According to CENTCOM, the strikes were in response to Iran’s attacks on commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz, which Washington described as “unjustified aggression against commercial shipping and civilian crews” .

Scale of Operation
A US official described the latest strikes as significantly larger than previous operations, with the scale and intensity estimated at four to five times greater than strikes conducted ten days earlier . The official characterized the campaign as “punishment” rather than “proportional response,” with the goal of making Iran “pay a heavy price” .

Iran’s Response
Iran has not issued an official response to the latest US claims. However, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps previously claimed to have “destroyed” 85 US military facilities in the region in response to earlier American strikes . The Iranian government has condemned US attacks as a “flagrant violation” of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding signed in June .

Regional Concerns
Analysts warn that continued tensions between Washington and Tehran could have significant consequences for global oil markets, maritime trade, and regional stability. The Strait of Hormuz remains a flashpoint, with Iran seeking “exclusive control” over the waterway while the US insists on maintaining freedom of navigation .
