WASHINGTON D.C., United States – Web Desk: The U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) has confirmed that a second Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU), carrying thousands of troops aboard amphibious warships, is now operating in the Middle East, further strengthening the American military footprint in the region .
According to a CENTCOM statement, the Boxer Amphibious Ready Group (ARG), along with the embarked 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit, is conducting operations in the Middle East as part of a routine scheduled deployment . A typical MEU comprises over 2,000 Marines and sailors capable of conducting ground, naval, and air operations, and is trained to respond rapidly to emergencies .
The Boxer ARG includes the amphibious assault ship USS Boxer, the amphibious transport dock USS Portland which recently arrived in the area, and the amphibious dock landing ship USS Comstock, which has been operating in the region since May . This new deployment will operate alongside the USS Tripoli Amphibious Ready Group, which has been stationed in the Middle East since late March, along with its accompanying warships and Marine forces .
Defense analysts say the U.S. is pursuing a strategy of maintaining and strengthening its military presence in the region amid rising tensions, securing sea lanes, and monitoring regional security developments . While U.S. officials describe the deployment as part of a routine operational schedule, it is being viewed globally as a significant development given the ongoing political and security situation in the region .
