US Defence Secretary Claims Iran Killed 45,000 Protesters

Date:

Washington, D.C., United States – Web Desk: U.S. Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth has accused Iran of severe internal repression and reiterated Washington’s stance that Tehran must not develop nuclear weapons.

Speaking during a media briefing, Hegseth alleged that Iranian authorities had killed tens of thousands of protesters in past unrest, though such claims remain disputed and have not been independently verified.

He said the United States’ objective remains clear: preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons, while leaving the door open for a negotiated agreement. “Iran still has an opportunity to reach a constructive deal,” he added.

Hegseth also highlighted U.S. military and strategic actions in the region, stating that Washington maintains operational control in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global oil transit route. He said enforcement measures, including maritime restrictions, would continue as long as necessary.

According to the defence secretary, several vessels linked to what he described as Iran’s “shadow fleet” had been intercepted prior to the tightening of maritime controls, while dozens of ships had been redirected in recent days.

He further warned that measures could intensify to pressure Iran into negotiations, stressing that the situation should not be borne solely by the United States. He called on European and Asian partners to play a greater role, noting their reliance on energy routes through the Strait of Hormuz.

Hegseth added that U.S. President Donald Trump had authorized action against any vessels involved in laying naval mines, and indicated that an additional aircraft carrier would soon be deployed to the Gulf of Oman.

The remarks come amid heightened tensions in the Middle East, with ongoing concerns over maritime security, energy supply routes, and nuclear proliferation risks.
