Is Italy being considered as a replacement for Iran in the FIFA World Cup 2026?

Date:

Zurich, Switzerland – Web Desk: Speculation over a potential replacement of Iran national football team with Italy national football team in the FIFA World Cup 2026 has been firmly dismissed by world football’s governing body, FIFA.

The debate emerged after reports suggested that a figure linked to the U.S. administration had floated the idea amid rising geopolitical tensions involving Iran, the United States, and Israel. The proposal quickly drew global attention, sparking discussions across football and political circles.

However, FIFA reiterated that participation in the World Cup is determined strictly through sporting merit and qualification, not political considerations. Officials emphasized that no such proposal is under review.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino has previously confirmed that Iran has secured qualification and will compete as scheduled in the 2026 tournament, which will be co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

Iranian authorities strongly rejected the reports, describing them as politically motivated and an attempt to interfere in the independence of global sport. Meanwhile, Italian officials also distanced themselves from the idea, stressing that World Cup qualification must be earned on the pitch.

Italy, a four-time World Cup champion, failed to qualify for the tournament through the official qualification process.

The controversy underscores ongoing concerns about the intersection of politics and sport, though FIFA’s stance signals a commitment to maintaining the integrity of its qualification system.
