US Ban on Canadian Alcohol, Dairy and Motorcycles Takes Effect
WASHINGTON, UNITED STATES — WEB DESK: US restrictions barring selected Canadian products from entering the American market took effect on Tuesday, marking another escalation in the prolonged trade dispute between Washington and Ottawa.
The measures cover most alcoholic beverages, selected dairy-related products and large motorcycles imported from Canada. The restrictions took effect at 12:01 a.m. Eastern Time on September 29, according to the measures announced by the Trump administration earlier this month.
The White House said the action was taken under Section 338 of the Tariff Act of 1930, arguing that Canada had maintained discriminatory trade practices affecting US commerce, particularly in alcohol and dairy. Canada disputes Washington’s broader approach to the trade relationship and has responded to previous US measures with its own tariffs.
The ban is more targeted than a blanket prohibition on Canadian dairy. It covers specified product categories, including many alcoholic beverages, whey-related products and motorcycles with engines exceeding 800cc. Other Canadian goods remain subject to tariffs rather than outright exclusion.
The latest restrictions followed Canada’s implementation earlier this month of retaliatory tariffs covering about $20 billion worth of US imports. Those measures targeted hundreds of American products at different tariff rates after trade negotiations between the two countries broke down.
The US had previously imposed 50% tariffs on about $20 billion worth of Canadian goods, according to the Associated Press. The latest import restrictions affect Canadian goods worth roughly $1 billion, although their immediate economic impact may be limited because many were already facing steep tariffs.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has indicated that Ottawa is seeking to reduce its economic dependence on the United States by expanding trade relationships elsewhere. AP reported that Canada is pursuing deeper commercial ties with markets including Europe and India.
Express Urdu reported that further immediate Canadian retaliation was not expected, citing Carney’s earlier assessment that the economic impact of the US import restrictions would be relatively small.
US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer has meanwhile said formal trade discussions remain frozen, although officials from the two countries continue to communicate periodically about potential agreements.
The dispute adds uncertainty ahead of future negotiations over the North American trading relationship and the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement, while businesses on both sides of the border face higher costs and restrictions from the continuing tariff confrontation.
