Washington, United States – Web Desk: News Article The United States has approved more than $8.6 billion in military sales to key Middle Eastern allies after bypassing the standard congressional review process, according to the U.S. Department of State.
The approvals were issued under emergency authority by U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who determined that urgent security conditions justified waiving congressional oversight requirements.
The arms packages include advanced defense systems and munitions for Qatar, Israel, Kuwait, and the United Arab Emirates.
Among the major deals are a $4.01 billion Patriot missile defense support package for Qatar, and a $2.5 billion integrated battle command system for Kuwait. Additional sales include Advanced Precision Kill Weapon Systems (APKWS) for Israel, Qatar, and the UAE, along with associated defense support contracts.
The principal contractors involved include major U.S. defense firms such as BAE Systems, RTX Corporation, Lockheed Martin, and Northrop Grumman.
The decision comes amid heightened regional tensions, following months of conflict involving Israel, Iran, and U.S. forces in the Middle East, with ongoing instability affecting several Gulf states.
The State Department said the expedited approvals were necessary to ensure continued defense readiness among U.S. partners in the region.
However, the move is expected to draw scrutiny in Washington, where arms sales to Middle Eastern countries have long faced bipartisan debate over strategic policy, human rights concerns, and oversight mechanisms.
Human rights groups have previously raised concerns about U.S. military partnerships with Gulf states and Israel, citing alleged restrictions on civil liberties and the humanitarian impact of regional conflicts.
Despite criticism, the United States continues to maintain strong defense cooperation with its regional allies, emphasizing strategic stability and security commitments.
