Web Desk | New York, USA The United Nations on Wednesday warned that the policies of the Afghan Taliban regime pose serious threats to regional and global stability. UN officials highlighted extremism, support for terrorist networks, and ongoing violations of women’s rights in Afghanistan.
Georgette Gagnon, Deputy Representative of the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA), briefed the Security Council, stating that terrorism risks and human rights abuses in Afghanistan remain a major concern for the international community. She stressed that the Taliban must take credible and effective steps against terrorism flourishing within the country.
“Neighboring countries have expressed serious concerns regarding active terrorist groups, including extremist factions, operating from Afghanistan,” Gagnon said. “Potential threats originating from Afghanistan have become a major challenge for the global community. The regime’s diplomatic isolation could exacerbate instability, terrorism, and narcotics risks in the region.”
Gagnon further criticized the Taliban’s ideologically and gender-biased laws, noting that they jeopardize the future of Afghan citizens, especially women, and strip the population of equal opportunities and basic human rights.
