London, UK – Web Desk: More than 45 members of the UK Parliament and House of Lords have formally urged the British government to issue an official apology for its historic role in facilitating the creation of Israel. The lawmakers sent a letter to Prime Minister Keir Starmer, emphasizing that Britain must acknowledge its past actions and their enduring consequences.
The letter highlights that the Balfour Declaration of 1917 set the stage for conditions leading to Israel’s establishment in 1948, which subsequently caused widespread displacement, hardships, and violence for the Palestinian population.
Signatories stressed that the UK should formally recognize the impact of this historic policy and extend an apology to the Palestinian people. British rule over Palestine lasted nearly three decades after the Ottoman Empire’s defeat, ending in 1948, yet successive UK governments have historically avoided taking formal responsibility or apologizing for this period.
This renewed call comes amid ongoing debates over Britain’s historical accountability in the Middle East and the long-term effects of colonial-era policies on regional conflicts.
