London, United Kingdom – Web Desk: The UK government has announced plans to proscribe Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) under new state threat powers, making support for the organization a criminal offence.
In a statement, the British government said the move is part of a broader crackdown on foreign state-linked proxy groups that pose a threat to the United Kingdom’s national security.
Officials said three organizations have been designated under the new legislation, including the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), the Islamic Movement of Companions of the Right, and Russia’s GRU Volunteer Corps.
According to UK authorities, the Islamic Movement of Companions of the Right has claimed responsibility for attacks targeting Jewish and Israeli-linked locations in Britain.
The government said the proposed ban on the IRGC and the other designated groups will be presented to Parliament next week for formal approval.
If approved, membership in or support for the proscribed organizations could become a criminal offence under UK law.
