Turkey Detains Afghan Migrants Amid Crackdown on Illegal Migration

Date:

Ankara, Turkey – Web Desk: Authorities in Turkey have detained 18 Afghan migrants, including women and children, in the northwestern city of Edirne as part of ongoing efforts to curb illegal migration toward Europe, according to Turkish and Afghan media reports.

The detainees were transferred to migration centers for deportation processing, officials said. Turkey’s Directorate General of Migration Management reported that more than 42,000 undocumented Afghan migrants were apprehended last year, reflecting intensified surveillance and enforcement measures along key migration routes.

The arrests come amid broader international concerns over illegal migration, with several countries tightening border controls and deportation procedures. Analysts say persistent political instability, weak governance, and the presence of extremist elements in Afghanistan continue to drive irregular migration and pose regional security challenges.

Since the Taliban took power, their policies have faced international criticism, while neighboring and transit countries have increased efforts to manage migration flows and address security and administrative pressures.
