Trump to Visit China in May for Talks with Xi After Iran War Delay

Date:

Washington, U.S. – Web Desk: U.S. President Donald Trump will visit China on May 14–15 for his first trip to the country in eight years, meeting President Xi Jinping, after postponing the visit due to the ongoing war in Iran.

Trump announced the rescheduled dates on Truth Social, adding that Xi will reciprocate with a visit to Washington later this year. “Our Representatives are finalizing preparations for these Historic Visits,” Trump wrote. “I look very much forward to spending time with President Xi in what will be, I am sure, a Monumental Event.”

The two-day visit is expected to combine ceremonial pomp with high-stakes diplomacy. Talks will likely cover trade, including agricultural and aviation agreements, Taiwan security, and the broader Middle East conflict. Analysts note that little progress is expected on Taiwan, where U.S. arms sales have angered Beijing.

The trip was repeatedly delayed as Trump focused on U.S. military operations against Iran and the global economic impact of the Middle East conflict, including Tehran’s threats to the Strait of Hormuz. White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt said Xi “understood that it’s very important for the president to be here throughout these combat operations right now.”

Trump and Xi last met in October 2025 in South Korea, where they agreed on a trade truce. China’s embassy declined to comment on the announcement, stating it does not release Xi’s schedule far in advance.

Observers say the rescheduled visit underscores the U.S.’s attempt to balance major global challenges—managing tensions with China while confronting Iran’s regional influence and stabilizing energy markets.
