Trump signals Iran talks as Pakistan prepares to host peace talks

Date:

Washington – Web Desk: U.S. President Donald Trump has described Iran’s current leadership as “very reasonable,” raising cautious optimism for diplomatic engagement as Pakistan prepares to host potential peace talks aimed at ending the escalating Middle East conflict.

Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, Trump said Washington and Tehran had engaged in both direct and indirect communication channels. He expressed confidence that a deal could be reached, though he acknowledged uncertainty over the outcome.

The remarks come as Pakistan positions itself as a key intermediary between the United States and Iran, with officials indicating that “meaningful talks” could take place in Islamabad in the coming days.

Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar said regional discussions had focused on achieving an early ceasefire and facilitating dialogue between Washington and Tehran for a “comprehensive and lasting settlement.”

However, it remains unclear whether both sides have formally agreed to participate.

Tensions continue to intensify across the region. Iran’s parliament speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf accused the United States of sending mixed signals—pursuing negotiations while preparing for potential military escalation. He warned that Tehran would not accept “humiliation” and would respond if U.S. forces were deployed on the ground.

The conflict has already expanded significantly following Israeli strikes, including the killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, who has since been succeeded by his son Mojtaba Khamenei.

Israel has intensified its military campaign, launching over 140 airstrikes across central and western Iran in a 24-hour period, targeting missile sites and military infrastructure. Iranian state media reported damage to key facilities, including airports and petrochemical plants.

The conflict has also triggered a broader regional crisis, with Iran effectively disrupting the Strait of Hormuz, a critical route for nearly 20% of global oil shipments. The disruption has sent global oil prices soaring and rattled financial markets.

Brent crude surged above $115 per barrel, marking one of the sharpest monthly increases on record, while stock markets across Asia declined amid fears of prolonged conflict and global recession.

Meanwhile, the United States Department of Defense has deployed thousands of additional troops to the Middle East, including Marines and special operations forces, increasing the possibility of a broader military confrontation.

Adding to the volatility, Iran-aligned Houthi forces in Yemen have entered the conflict, launching attacks toward Israel and raising concerns about disruptions in another strategic shipping route, the Bab el-Mandeb Strait.

As diplomatic efforts intensify, the coming days are expected to be critical in determining whether negotiations can de-escalate one of the most serious geopolitical crises in recent years.
