Washington, United States – Web Desk: US President Donald Trump has said the United States could assume responsibility for securing the Strait of Hormuz and should be financially compensated for protecting one of the world’s most strategically important maritime routes.
Speaking in a telephone interview on Fox News’ “Fox & Friends”, Trump said the US would likely “keep the strait” and become its guardian.
“We’re going to keep the strait, and we’ll probably run it. We’ll become the guardian of the strait. Maybe we’ll call it the guardian angel of the strait. And we should be reimbursed for that,” Trump said.
He added that the United States would protect the vital shipping lane but expected allied nations that benefit from its security to contribute financially.
“We’re going to guard it. We’re going to get paid for guarding it — a lot of money,” Trump said, adding that wealthy nations aligned with Washington should reimburse the US for the cost of maintaining security.
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s busiest energy corridors, carrying a significant share of global oil and liquefied natural gas exports. Trump’s remarks come amid heightened tensions in the Gulf and growing concerns over maritime security.
