A vessel was struck by an unidentified projectile while leaving the Strait of Hormuz, with one crew member reported as a casualty and the engine room damaged.
Muscat – Web Desk: A commercial vessel was struck by an unidentified projectile while transiting out of the Strait of Hormuz, damaging its engine room and leaving one crew member reported as a casualty, according to the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO).
The incident occurred as the vessel was departing the strategic waterway, with the ship’s security officer reporting damage to the engine room following the strike.
The UKMTO said assistance was being provided to the vessel’s remaining crew by the Omani Coast Guard.
Authorities have so far reported no pollution or environmental damage resulting from the incident.
The latest incident comes amid heightened maritime security concerns in and around the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important shipping routes for global energy supplies.
The waterway connects the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea and serves as a key transit route for oil and other energy shipments. Any disruption to commercial shipping through the strait could have wider implications for global energy markets and international trade.
The circumstances surrounding the attack, including the origin of the projectile and who may have been responsible, remain unclear.
Maritime authorities continue to monitor the situation as concerns grow over the safety of commercial vessels operating in the region.
