Italian authorities have arrested an Israeli national after seizing 216 kilograms of suspected narcotics at Rome’s Fiumicino Airport, officials said.
Rome, Italy – Web Desk: According to Italy’s Customs Agency and Financial Police, the suspect arrived in Rome on a flight from Tel Aviv. During routine security screening, officers became suspicious of his luggage and carried out a detailed inspection.
Authorities said they recovered approximately 216 kilograms of a plant-based narcotic from seven suitcases. The substance, which contains a stimulant compound, is subject to strict legal controls and import restrictions across several European countries.
The suspect was taken into custody on suspicion of drug trafficking, while the seized narcotics have been confiscated. Investigators are examining whether the individual was acting alone or was part of a larger international drug smuggling network.
Italian authorities said the investigation remains ongoing and evidence will be presented before the court as legal proceedings move forward.
Officials also confirmed that the suspect has requested to be returned to Israel, although no decision has yet been announced regarding that request.
