Islamabad, Pakistan – Web Desk: Somalia is in advanced talks with Pakistan to purchase up to 24 JF-17 Thunder fighter jets in a deal reportedly valued at around $900 million, according to media reports and defence sources.
Sources said the proposed agreement includes the acquisition of modern JF-17 aircraft, with a focus on the latest Block III variant. The defence package could also include pilot training, weapons integration, and logistical support.
If finalised, the deal would mark a major step in rebuilding Somalia’s air combat capability following the collapse of the state in 1991.
Reports suggest that Saudi Arabia and Türkiye may potentially provide financial support for the purchase. Pakistan has previously exported the JF-17 aircraft to Myanmar, Nigeria, and Azerbaijan, while Bangladesh and Iraq have also expressed interest.
Defence analysts say the potential deal could have implications for the regional security balance in Africa.
