Sharjeel Memon says illegal approvals during Sattar’s mayoralty fueled Gul Plaza tragedy
Karachi, Pakistan – Web Desk: Sindh Information Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon has alleged that former Karachi Mayor and MQM-P leader Dr. Farooq Sattar, along with Jamaat-e-Islami administrators, played a role in the illegal approvals and lease irregularities that contributed to the Gul Plaza disaster.
Responding to Dr. Sattar’s press conference, Minister Memon stated that no matter how eloquently Sattar speaks or uses metaphors, he cannot alter the facts. He emphasized that the decisions which ultimately led to the Gul Plaza tragedy were directly or indirectly influenced by Sattar during his tenure as mayor, when the lease, mutation, and regularization documents were signed under his supervision.
Sharjeel Memon added that historical records and government documents clearly show that the foundation for illegal constructions and unregulated regularizations in Karachi was laid during that period. By legitimizing violations, unsafe building practices were entrenched, creating a city-wide culture of unsafe structures.
The minister further stated that the Gul Plaza incident was not the result of a single-day lapse but the culmination of decades of flawed decisions and administrative negligence. Karachi residents are now asking accountability questions: if the foundation itself was wrong, who will answer for its consequences?
Memon concluded that the citizens deserve the truth, and those who legitimized illegal constructions are morally and politically accountable.
