Sindh Assembly passes resolution against Sindh division and Karachi separation.

Date:

Karachi, Pakistan – Web Desk: The Sindh Assembly has passed a resolution rejecting any move to divide the province or separate Karachi, declaring such efforts unconstitutional and a threat to national unity. The resolution was adopted by a majority vote, with Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and Jamaat-e-Islami supporting the motion, while Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) opposed it.

The resolution, presented by Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah during a session chaired by Speaker Awais Qadir Shah, stated that Karachi is an integral and inseparable part of Sindh and will remain so. It warned that any attempt to split Sindh or create Karachi as a separate province would be against history, the Constitution, and democratic values, and would undermine national cohesion and the federal structure.

Addressing the assembly, the chief minister said discussions had taken place in some quarters about dividing Sindh or separating Karachi, which he strongly condemned. He added that anyone opposing the resolution would be considered against Sindh, stressing that Sindh played a foundational role in the creation of Pakistan.

The resolution highlighted Sindh’s historical, cultural, and political identity, citing the Indus Valley civilisation, Mohenjo-daro, and prominent Sufi figures such as Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai and Lal Shahbaz Qalandar. It also referenced Sindh Assembly’s 1943 resolution supporting the creation of Pakistan and the province’s resistance to the One Unit scheme.

The document further noted that under Pakistan’s 1973 Constitution, provincial boundaries cannot be altered without a two-thirds majority, reinforcing Sindh’s constitutional status as a historic federating unit. It concluded that Karachi remains Pakistan’s economic lifeline and a symbol of unity, and any attempt to separate it would pose a serious threat to the federation.
