Razaullah Shines on Test Debut Despite Pakistan’s England Whitewash
BIRMINGHAM, UNITED KINGDOM — WEB DESK: Pakistan may have suffered a bruising 3-0 Test series whitewash in England, but the remarkable emergence of 21-year-old Razaullah at Edgbaston has offered a rare reason for optimism about the national side’s future.
Playing his first Test after just eight first-class matches, the young fast bowler immediately attracted attention with his pace and ability to trouble England’s established batting lineup. On the opening day, he dismissed captain Joe Root and Emilio Gay, with his debut spell earning praise from former England captain Nasser Hussain.
Razaullah ultimately finished England’s first innings with four wickets for 148 runs from 23 overs, dismissing Gay, Root, Jamie Smith and Ollie Robinson as England accumulated 453.
But it was with the bat that his debut became extraordinary.
Walking in at No. 9 with Pakistan at 312 for seven and still eight runs short of making England bat again, Razaullah launched an audacious counterattack. He smashed 81 from only 63 deliveries, including nine sixes, as Pakistan recovered to set England a target of 130.
His nine sixes equalled the record for the most sixes in an innings by a player on Test debut, while his half-century came from just 43 deliveries, the fastest by a Pakistani on Test debut.
The innings transformed the atmosphere at Edgbaston. The English crowd gave the Pakistani debutant a standing ovation after a fearless performance that provided one of the few memorable moments for the tourists during an otherwise deeply disappointing series.
The Express Tribune columnist Saleem Khaliq described Razaullah’s first three days of international cricket as a rapid journey from “hero” to “zero” and back again. After the excitement surrounding his opening-day wickets, criticism emerged when he conceded heavily, before his explosive batting performance dramatically changed perceptions once more.
The rapid swings in reaction also underline a familiar problem in Pakistan cricket: young players are frequently elevated to star status after a single performance and criticised just as quickly when results deteriorate.
Razaullah himself displayed little of that anxiety at the crease. Speaking after his innings, he said he had backed himself against England’s short-ball strategy and wanted to play without fear. The ICC reported that he particularly targeted the pace attack of Jofra Archer, Gus Atkinson and Josh Tongue.
His debut, however, cannot disguise Pakistan’s broader problems.
England completed an eight-wicket victory at Edgbaston to secure a 3-0 series sweep, Pakistan’s first Test series whitewash in England in 72 years.
That makes Razaullah’s emergence both encouraging and cautionary. Pakistan appear to have uncovered a young cricketer with genuine pace, fearless batting ability and potential as a lower-order all-rounder, but one spectacular Test is not enough to establish a career.
The challenge now is to develop that talent consistently rather than burden him with premature comparisons to Pakistan greats such as Waqar Younis or Wasim Akram.
For Pakistan cricket, Razaullah’s Edgbaston debut therefore offers something valuable after a disastrous tour: evidence that the talent remains — and a reminder that identifying, developing and protecting it matters just as much.
