Islamabad | Web Desk: Pakistan’s Senate witnessed a heated exchange as Special Assistant to the Prime Minister, Senator Rana Sanaullah, responded to opposition concerns over former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s health. He urged political parties not to politicize the matter, advising that any concerns should be addressed through the Supreme Court.
Rana Sanaullah spoke during a session where Opposition Leader Allama Raja Nasir Abbas raised issues regarding Khan’s medical condition. Sanaullah emphasized that reports submitted by Barrister Salman Safdar confirm that Khan received all necessary facilities while in custody, including three meals a day and access to exercise equipment. The Chief Justice of Pakistan has reviewed reports from both Salman Safdar and the prison superintendent, finding them consistent and confirming that no request for treatment was denied.
“The founder of PTI has been provided medical care whenever he raised concerns,” Sanaullah said, adding that using Khan’s health as a political tool constitutes a serious offense. He stressed that no individual associated with the prison administration or otherwise should politicize the matter, warning of legal and ethical violations.
Sanaullah further stated that Khan received some of the country’s best available medical care. He noted that if superior specialists exist outside the hospital system, such as at the Cancer Hospital, Khan can be evaluated by them as well. He highlighted that the Supreme Court has allowed additional medical examinations to ensure comprehensive care. All discussions between Khan’s legal representatives and the authorities have been implemented appropriately.
In conclusion, Sanaullah told opposition lawmakers that they should refrain from commenting on or politicizing the health of any individual in custody. “If you have further concerns, you may approach the Supreme Court,” he said, emphasizing that political motivations should not interfere with medical care or legal procedures.
The statement has fueled ongoing debate in Pakistan about political accountability, legal oversight, and the treatment of prominent political figures in custody, underscoring the need for transparency and adherence to judicial instructions.
