New law punishes stealing, buying, or selling sewer covers with 1–10 years in jail
Lahore, Pakistan – Web Desk: Punjab government, led by CM Punjab Maryam Nawaz, has announced strict penalties for stealing, buying, or selling sewer manhole covers. Offenders may face 1 to 10 years in prison, along with hefty fines if negligence causes fatalities.
Maryam Nawaz highlighted the urgency of the law after recent tragic incidents, including a woman and her 10-month-old child falling into a sewer near Bhatti Gate, Lahore, and a separate incident in Sargodha where a child fell into a drainage channel but was rescued safely.
The legislation aims to protect public safety, prevent theft-related accidents, and ensure accountability for negligence in urban infrastructure management.
