Lahore, Pakistan – Web Desk: Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has announced work-from-home arrangements for government offices and the temporary closure of educational institutions across the province due to a worsening petroleum crisis and the prevailing regional security situation.
According to the Punjab government, schools, colleges and universities will remain closed from March 10 until March 31. However, classes may continue through online learning platforms, while scheduled examinations will proceed as planned.
The decision was taken as authorities attempt to manage fuel consumption during the ongoing crisis. The government has also suspended official fuel allocations for provincial ministers until the petroleum shortage is resolved. In addition, petrol and diesel allowances for government officers’ vehicles have been reduced by 50 percent with immediate effect.
Under the new policy, protocol vehicles accompanying ministers and senior officials have also been restricted. Only one vehicle will be permitted for essential security purposes.
The provincial government said only essential staff would be required to attend offices, while other employees will perform duties remotely. Official meetings will be conducted through online platforms and teleconferencing to ensure government operations continue without disruption.
Authorities have also suspended government outdoor events. The annual cultural festival, the Horse and Cattle Show, has been postponed as part of measures to reduce unnecessary fuel consumption.
To ensure transparency in fuel distribution, district petroleum monitoring committees will be established across Punjab. The Punjab Information Technology Board has been tasked with developing a track-and-trace system to monitor petroleum supplies.
Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz also directed authorities to strictly monitor public transport fares across the province and take legal action against overcharging.
Appealing to the public, the chief minister urged citizens to avoid unnecessary outdoor gatherings and late-night shopping during the crisis. She also advised people not to stockpile essential commodities, stressing that authorities would take strict action against anyone attempting to exploit the situation.
Punjab Education Minister Rana Sikandar Hayat confirmed that educational institutions will shift to online classes during the closure period, while Grade-8 examinations and board exams will continue according to the announced schedule.
Officials say the measures are aimed at conserving fuel and maintaining essential services during the ongoing crisis.
