Section 144 Enforced to Ensure Peace During Basant; Religious & Political Symbol Restrictions
Lahore, Pakistan – Web Desk: The Punjab government has imposed Section 144 across Lahore ahead of the Basant 2026 festival to maintain religious harmony and public safety during the kite-flying celebrations. Authorities have announced strict regulations, including a ban on kite designs featuring religious texts, holy sites, political symbols, or national flags, to prevent any potential provocation or unrest.
Under the Punjab Kite Flying Act 2025, preparations, sale, and use of kites bearing religious or political imagery are prohibited for a period of 30 days. During Basant, only plain single-colored or multi-colored kites without any offensive images will be permitted. Any violation, including production, storage, transport, sale, or use of restricted kites, will be treated as a punishable offense.
Authorities have warned that metallic strings, nylon-coated wires, or glass-coated threads are strictly banned due to their highly dangerous nature. Offenders can face up to 5 years in prison and fines up to PKR 2 million, while those involved in producing or selling banned materials may face 7 years imprisonment and fines up to PKR 5 million.
The Deputy Commissioner of Lahore issued the Basant 2026 notification, emphasizing that kite flying is allowed only as a recreational activity while respecting public order and religious sensitivities. Law enforcement agencies have been directed to strictly enforce Section 144, ensuring a safe and peaceful festival.
The government has made it clear that no unlawful activity will be tolerated during Basant, and public cooperation is requested to prevent mishaps or escalation of tensions. By restricting the use of provocative symbols and hazardous kite materials, authorities aim to protect lives, maintain social harmony, and ensure a safe celebration for all residents of Punjab.
This enforcement comes in response to previous concerns about incidents of unrest during Basant, where kites featuring controversial symbols had the potential to incite conflict. The government is proactively taking measures to balance cultural tradition with public safety.
