PTI Protest in Senate Over Imran Khan’s Health Sparks Tensions

Date:

Islamabad | Web Desk: Pakistan’s Senate witnessed intense proceedings on Tuesday as PTI lawmakers protested over former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s health, raising concerns about governance and human rights.

Opposition leader Allama Raja Nasir Abbas addressed the Senate, claiming that Khan has lost 85% of vision in one eye and attributing responsibility to the current government. He warned that if the matter is not addressed, the PTI could take their protests to the streets, even risking personal safety to highlight the issue.

During the session presided over by Senator Waqar Mehdi, Raja Nasir Abbas requested suspension of regular agenda items to discuss Khan’s medical condition. Law Minister Azam Nazir Tarar responded that, according to reports submitted by Barrister Salman Safdar under Supreme Court orders, Khan’s health was satisfactory until April. Subsequent complaints were addressed by the prison administration, including medical treatment at PIMS Hospital. Tarar emphasized that the opposition should avoid politicizing Khan’s health and follow legal procedures for further inquiries.

The session grew more chaotic as PTI senators stood in protest and displayed images of Imran Khan, prompting the presiding officer to instruct removal of all pictures to maintain decorum. Senator Nasir Butt warned that further protests could include additional images, signaling continued tension within the chamber.

Despite the disruption, the Senate passed amendments to several bills, including the Pakistan Citizenship Act 1951, PEMA Ordinance, and Press Employees (Conditions of Service) Act 1973. The Narcotics Control and Regulatory Authority Act 2024 amendments were postponed for further review. The session was adjourned until 10:30 AM the following day.

The developments have drawn attention across Pakistan, highlighting the intersection of political tensions, legal oversight, and concerns over the treatment of prominent political figures in custody.
